Nutrition & Functional Health
We have partnered with Registered Nutritional Therapist Layla Gordon (DipION, mBANT, CNHC, O.A. Dip. (Herbalist), Ba (Hons))
Nutritional Science and Functional Medicine
Applying her knowledge of nutritional science and functional medicine, Layla works with individuals to promote optimal health by identifying and addressing the ROOT CAUSE to health concerns.
Many people suffer with common health conditions, however, if changes to nutrition and lifestyle are made, then these health conditions may be resolved.
Health Conditions such as:
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly common condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high. Over time, type 2 diabetes may lead to other chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic inflammation and accelerated aging.
High Blood Pressure
If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes. Persistent high blood pressure can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.
High Cholesterol
High cholesterol is a fatty substance that may lead to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart attack. Cholesterol is just one factor that may increase your risk of heart disease, but functional medicine will assess this alongside other metabolic and lipid markers to assess overall risk and address all of these to improve heart health.
Here's the good news
Nutritional therapy can help all of the above conditions.
Layla works with individuals to optimise health by identifying the possible contributing factors and putting a plan in place to deal with these.
She recognises that every person is unique and, therefore, has an individual set of dietary requirements. It is her job to establish what improvements or changes an individual can make to their diet to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
But that's not all
As well as helping people with the above conditions, Layla’s expertise is also in helping people with:
Gut Health
Good gut health is at the cornerstone to all good health. By taking a comprehensive look at an individual’s gut health, we can see if there is an imbalance in the gut microbiome or if the immune system that lives in the gut is reacting to certain foods. These can cause systemic issues around the rest of body such as lethargy, brain fog, skin issues and weight gain.
Digestive & Bowel Disorders
It’s important to address digestive conditions as these could range from mild food sensitivities to more serious and chronic conditions such as IBD (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis) which are all inflammatory conditions. While it’s important to work with your doctor in these cases, there are many ways in which nutrition and targeted supplements may also be able to help ease symptoms, for example, an anti-inflammatory diet and certain strains of probiotics may help to dampen inflammation.
Hormone Imbalances
Hormone imbalances can occur at any time in a persons’ life. For example, men can experience low testosterone levels, which can result in loss of muscle, weight gain, low mood, low libido and sleep issues. Hormone imbalances in women can result in PMS, fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, infertility and symptoms associated with the menopause and perimenopause.
Weight Management
Weight management is a complex issue not simply just about calorie counting. It involves many body systems such as gut health, hormone balance, sleep and stress. A core strategy to this is blood glucose control and that can be managed by using small but measurable steps such as time-restricted eating, increasing protein, complex carbs and good fats, and decreasing processed foods that are high in refined carbs and sugars.
Chronic Fatigue
There are multiple factors that can contribute to this and often a number of body systems are involved – cellular health, mitochondrial health, gut health, immune function, thyroid, adrenal and liver health. Functional medicine takes a holistic approach and will assess and support all of these areas to help uncover the root cause.
Food Sensitivities / Intolerances
They can test for food allergies and sensitivity which may play a role in some of the above conditions
